History of Kitchener’s Island

Kitchener’s Island, also known as Botanical Island, has a fascinating history. In 1899, it was named after Consul-General Lord Kitchener, who used the island as his headquarters during military campaigns in Sudan. Later, Kitchener received the island as a gift, and he dedicated himself to his passion for botany.

Between September 1911 and June 1914, he transformed the 750-meter (2,460 ft) long island into a lush garden. Kitchener imported rare subtropical and exotic plants from countries such as India and Malaysia.

Botanical Expansion and Research

In 1928, the Ministry of Irrigation expanded Kitchener’s work. Trees and plants from all five continents were added, turning the island into a global botanical showcase. Eventually, the island became part of the Egyptian government and served as a Botanical Research Institute.

Today, visitors can explore a wide variety of rare plants while enjoying the serene atmosphere of the island.
